Travel :5 Ways to get the most out of any cultural holiday to New Zealand
“
New Zealand is the king of culture and it’s not hard to see why, what with its interesting cities, varied landscapes, years of history and beautiful beaches.
”

There’s so much to see and do it can seem overwhelming at the best of times, so here are five top ways you can get the most out of any cultural holiday to this amazing country.
Skydiving
If there’s one thing I know about New Zealand and Kiwis in general, it’s that they love a bit of adrenaline. Skydiving is the perfect way to unleash some of that adrenaline and very popular amongst travellers and backpackers, as is to be expected. Many flock to the shores of Lake Taupo on the North Island, mainly for its incredible backdrop. Prices start around 300 NZD, slightly more if you want photo evidence (probably necessary!).
Bungee jumping
Keeping on the topic of adrenaline junkies – bungee jumping is also a hot activity in New Zealand.
Head to the Nevis Bungee Jump, just on the outskirts of Queenstown – it’s an eye-watering 500ft high (the third highest in the world!). In his blog at 1Cover, Ben Groundwater also recommends the world’s first commercial bungee, which was set-up in the 1980s on the Kaarau Bridge near Queenstown. At 43 metres above ground, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but an experience nonetheless.
Skiing
Despite its southern hemisphere positioning, New Zealand is great for skiing, especially the South Island. Christchurch has some incredible skiing spots, where you can take in the sights at Mt Hutt, which was voted NZ’s Best Ski Resort for four years running.
New Zealand is a great skiing and snowboarding location as its peak season is in July, so if you fancy a ski trip in the height of the summer in the northern hemisphere, prices and crowds tend to be more appealing during this time.

Visit Wellington
A trip to New Zealand isn’t complete without a trip to Wellington, aka the cultural hub. The country’s capital boasts some of the best architecture, nightlife, and bars and restaurants. There’s also an iconic red cable car, which takes you down from the mountains which fringe the city into the centre.
There’s plenty of arts-based and cultural activities to do in the capital. Make sure you visit the waterfront, the Botanic Garden, the City Gallery, and the Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum. The displays are great for art, history and science lovers, and are renowned for being unique above everything else.

Road trip
What better way to round off than with the best cultural experience there is: a good old road trip.
A popular choice in New Zealand, especially amongst backpackers who intend on staying for a long time, is to buy an old camper van and travel the length of the country, soaking it all up in their own time. If you don’t have time or budget for that, you can still enjoy some of the top sights. Head to the North Island for Auckland and the Bay of Islands loop, Wellington, or if you’re South Island-bound, there’s the Queenstown to Christchurch loop.
