Restaurant Review : Donne Biriyani House , Sarjapur Road , Bangalore | India
Donne Biryani , the traditional rice pulav or biryani from Bangalore region , has derived its name from dried leaf bowls used to serve it.
The dish is usually served by local military hotels in the region. These were , once upon a time, small eateries that were set up originally for Maratha soldiers. Later , they also provided food to the armies of Tipu and Britishers.
Many will dispute whether it is indeed a Biryani or just the pulav. I consider it as more as a pulav as it is prepared with jeera samba, the short grained and aromatic variety of rice and meat that is cooked with green mint , chilies and coriander masala and common spices like coriander, cumin, whole garam masalas along with ginger-garlic paste, usually over coal or wood fire traditionally.
Donne Biriyani House at Sarjapur Road is one of the popular places for having Donne Biryani. Located opposite Bata Showroom and 500 meters away from the kaikondrahalli lake , the outlet is part of the city based chain.
Apart from the chicken, mutton and egg biryanis , the menu also has Kshatriya kabab , chilli chicken , mutton and chicken fry along with soft drinks.
We tried both the chicken and mutton biryanis along with the kshatriya kababs. Among the biryanis, the mutton biryani was a clear winner for us with flavours and meat scoring over the others. The deep fried Kshatriya Kebabs were juicy and succulent and acted as a good companion to their biryanis. In our next outing , we would like to try the other delicacies from the menu.
