Restaurant Review : Mahesh Lunch Home, Bangalore | India
The delicious Mangalorean food saga of Mahesh Lunch Home of Mumbai continues in Bangalore.
The name synonymous with the authentic Mangalorean seafood cuisine in Mumbai , Mahesh Lunch Home, has been also delighting the sea food lovers of Bangalore for many years now.
Going back into its history , it was in the year 1977, Sooru Karkera started a place to serve non vegetarian mangalorean food with bar in erstwhile Bombay and since then the place is known for its delicious mangalorean style seafood. These days , his son Mahendra takes care of management.
The delightful seafood soup set the tone for the our evening with tantalising chilli garlic flavours. During the meal, we also had traditional coastal thirst quenchers drinks , sol kadi and coconut water.
It was followed by must haves starters like Pomfret Tawa fry, marinated and cooked with southern indian spices, though I am not sure if it was traditional meet mirsang paste from Mangalore and Lady Fish Rawa fry , another mangalorean speciality , where Kane fish marinated with spices and coated with semolina (rava) and and shallow fried to perfection, giving it a crunchy crusty coat.
Few of us also tried the Squid Rings garlic and Crab Butter Garlic , both mildly flavoured with butter , pepper and garlic , a very non- mangalorean recipe in midst of the mangalorean feast
The Mangalorean feast continued with some of the delectable mains from the MLH menu.
A robust, spicy classic from Kundapur near Mangalore, Chicken Ghee Roast is an absolute mangalorean food essentials for me.This fiery hot red, zesty and spicy dish with distinctive aroma and taste of clarified butter or ghee, used to roast the chicken and spices is not a dish for the calorie conscious faint- heart.
We also ordered the Prawn Sukka , mangalorean dry delicacy  of prawns made with coconut and spices. Both these lip smacking mains go best with Neer dosa and plain boiled rice. We tried it with Appam as well.
Served with served with crispy, thin rice wafers also known as rotti , Kori Rotti or Mangalorean Chicken Curry is delicious coconut milk based chicken dish.
In the end , the desserts we had, were the Tender Coconut Payasam & Caramel custard along with my favourite Malai KulfiÂ
